How Stop the Bleed Program Can Impact Schools

Updated: Jun 3, 2019

Keeping kids safe at school is a top priority. Unfortunately, school shootings are on the rise. This statistic shows the number of school shootings in the United States from 2000 to January 9, 2019. As of January 9, 2019, there were 13 school shootings in the U.S. In 2018, there was the highest number of school shootings, with 97.

Unfortunately, this is a tragedy that schools must be prepared for. Experts say some of the 17 people killed in the senseless Florida school shooting might have survived if their bleeding could have been stopped in time.

Because it takes only 5 to 10 minutes for a gunshot victim to bleed to death, the American College of Surgeons has long pushed a nationwide program to train teachers simple but effective means of halting blood loss.

Stop the Bleed

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign that is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. The program is also a call-to-action for every classroom to have a special "stop the bleed" kit.
